Solid Snake is framed for the disaster and is presumed dead.
The game’s second chapter, the Big Shell Incident, occurs two years later, in 2009. Players are introduced to a new character, Raiden, a young operative of the special forces unit FOXHOUND. Raiden’s mission is to infiltrate an offshore decontamination facility called the Big Shell, which was built to clean up the oil spill caused by the Tanker Incident. The Big Shell has been occupied by a terrorist group known as the Sons of Liberty, led by a man claiming to be Solid Snake. The terrorists are demanding a ransom and threaten to destroy the facility, causing an environmental disaster.
As Raiden progresses through the Big Shell, he encounters various allies and adversaries, including a mysterious individual named Pliskin, who is later revealed to be Solid Snake in disguise. Raiden also meets members of the terrorist group Dead Cell, such as the enigmatic Vamp, the explosive Fatman, and the fortune-telling Fortune. He is supported remotely by his commanding officer, Colonel Campbell, and his girlfriend, Rosemary.
Part 2: Unraveling the Conspiracy and Climactic Confrontations
Throughout the Big Shell Incident, Raiden uncovers an elaborate conspiracy orchestrated by the shadowy organization known as The Patriots. He learns that the Big Shell facility is actually a cover for a new Metal Gear project called Arsenal Gear, which houses a powerful artificial intelligence named GW. The AI is designed to control and manipulate digital information, allowing The Patriots to shape world events and maintain power.
Raiden is confronted by the true leader of the Sons of Liberty, Solidus Snake, who is revealed to be another clone of Big Boss and the former President of the United States. Solidus seeks to liberate the world from The Patriots’ control by destroying GW and exposing their machinations. As Raiden delves deeper into the conspiracy, he discovers that his entire mission has been manipulated by The Patriots, including his relationship with Rosemary and the Colonel’s orders.
In a series of climactic battles, Raiden and Solid Snake fight their way through Arsenal Gear, facing off against Dead Cell members, legions of mass-produced Metal Gear RAY units, and ultimately, Solidus Snake himself. With the help of Otacon and other allies, Raiden and Snake manage to disable GW and defeat Solidus, although The Patriots remain at large.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty expanded on the series’ complex narrative and themes, exploring issues such as the manipulation of information, the nature of reality, and the concept of individuality.
